Igniting MSME Growth in Africa

  • Abidjan AKWABA Tent, Sofitel Abidjan Hotel Ivoire, Boulevard Hassan II District Autonome d'Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire (map)

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) form a backbone of African economies, representing a diverse range of businesses operating in various sectors. They play a pivotal role in fostering innovation, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to economic growth. Despite having immense potential for developing the African continent, these enterprises face various challenges, including consistent struggle with limited access to adequate and affordable financing, inadequate infrastructures, and regulatory barriers. As such, this creates a substantial financing gap that hinders their growth potential, forcing many to rely on expensive informal financial mechanisms and limited support. This highlights the pressing need for innovative financial instruments and platforms to reach underserved MSMEs and catalyse transformative economic growth across the continent.

The existing financial ecosystem often overlooks the specific characteristics and needs of MSMEs, especially those operating in rural areas or the informal sector. These enterprises lack collaterals, credit history, and financial documentation required by traditional banks. Consequently, they are perceived as high-risk borrowers, limiting access to credit and investment. The need for practical, innovative financial solutions is therefore paramount to unlocking the potential of these vital economic actors. To truly empower African MSMEs and enable them to drive sustainable growth, it is crucial to develop and implement financial solutions that are both accessible and tailored to their unique circumstances.

This side event seeks to explore and promote such practical, innovative financial solutions, focusing on strategies that can effectively bridge the financing gap. By highlighting successful models, fostering dialogue among stakeholders, and identifying actionable strategy, this event aims to develop a more inclusive and supportive financial ecosystem for African MSMEs, enabling them to thrive and contribute significantly to the continent's economic transformation.
